Film Trailer Questionare Conclusion

Gender:

Upon investigation into trailer preferences among different genders, I found that males tend to prefer the darker and more action orientated genres such as thriller, horror and sic-fi. Females on the other hand preferred lighter toned genres such as comedy and romance. The choices of favourite film also reflects their chosen genre.

Trailer Type:

Overall there was more people who preferred to have a longer theatrical trailer than a shorter trailer. This would allow me to focus on other elements such as the narrative and pacing of the trailer. I found that people would like to see a more narrative based trailer, while also keeping a good pace in order to keep the audience interested. This will allow me to get some of the more complex sides of the story into the trailer while keeping a fast pace through action in order to keep the audience interested.

Rating of the film:

I found that a vast majority of the people I have asked questions to would prefer a higher age rating for my content. They voted for the idea of using a red band trailer instead of a green band trailer. This will allow me to show natural and uncut footage that will depict the true nature of the film, instead of showing a censored trailer without some of the blood, violence and swearing. I am still trying to appeal to audience members who voted against the use of a red band by enforcing the lighter tone that comes with the film instead of any unnecessary hyper violence.

What have I discovered from other peoples interests?:

I have found that almost everyone I sent a questionnaire to voted for films with more mature content as their favourite films. This means that I could potentially create a film with more mature components that could still appeal to the people who were against a more mature rating. I have also discovered that my target audience within the genre would be met since most males find that violence and action appeal to them, however this questionnaire has given me some ideas how to find a larger range of supporters for the film outside of the typical crime audience. I will aim to draw the audience in through the use of a compelling narrative.

Production Log

Week beginning September 14 - I managed to create a power point which summarised my main ideas for different possible film trailers. I presented the presentation to the class and used their feedback to influence the next stage of my planning. It has become apparent that the crime film was the most well received idea within the class.

Week beginning September 21- To follow up my previous presentation, I created a questionnaire in order to decide if there is an audience within the class for the crime film which I wish to make and to judge what genre conventions such as violence would be able to work well with my chosen audience.

Week beginning September 28-  I found that many would prefer an unedited red band trailer, meaning that I can make the crime film the certification that I originally intended and will not have to cut around the mature themes.

Week beginning November 30- I launched a survey to determine the most popular of the titles which I had selected. I had begun working on the script for the film and have now finished it. I have applied for audio permission for the song Half Full Glass of Wine-Tame Impala by reaching out to the Universal Music Group. I have created talent/location release forms, call sheets,  site plans, risk assessment and location scouting sheets which have been filled out by the required people. I have completed my research and have developed a compony logo based on my research.

Week beginning December 28 - I have researched my shoot requirements for hair, make-up, costumes, props etc. I have also completed my first day of filming.

Week beginning January 4- I have begun the editing process. I have now completed my second day of shooting

Week beginning January 11- I have completed my third day of shooting and have begun editing the footage. I have started my edit decision list which I will continue to update as new footage arrives

Week beginning January 18 - I finished my final day of shooting and am now editing the clips together into a rough cut

Week beginning February 22- I have uploaded the rough cut of my film and have began using the initial feedback

Week beginning February 29 - I have began addressing issues of pacing and audio that were found within the rough cut

Week Beginning March 21 - I have worked on the criticism from the rough cut and believe that the video is of a finished quality. I was intending to upload the week before but due to technical issues, I was forced to push the date back on two occasions. I have uploaded the finished film to YouTube

Initial Ideas: Trailer

After presenting my ideas to the class, I managed to gain a wide range of audience feedback. The majority of the class seemed to like the idea of the thriller and the idea of the crime film. However most of the class seemed to choose the idea of the crime film as their favourite as they liked the sound of the tone and direction in which the trailer will unfold. In order to clarify this I will launch questionares in order to see if there is a majority audience of the crime film which I wish to create.

Film Trailer Idea

Crime

The intertwining story of three young criminals, a powerful crime boss and henchmen, and a pure hearted young man.

After three low-level criminals find themselves out of their depth after they steal from a powerful crime boss, they must pull of a series of crimes, each more elaborate and dangerous as the last in order to pay the boss back. The three find their morality and lives pushed to the limit, meanwhile they are being pursued by a figure from their past.

The narrative takes place during an interview as the young man sheds some light on previous events. We follow the track of these different characters as their stories begin to overlap.

Characters and motivations:

Three criminals- They aim to rise through the ranks as petty criminals by stealing a car supposedly containing high value substances, this sparks a chain of events that lead to the group getting captured and manipulated by a powerful crime boss.

Crime Boss- Has to make an example of the three, also wants to earn his money back

Young man- Has demons from the past to settle with the three. He looks to put them all away for the rest of their lives by collecting evidence against them (photos and so on). He continues to pursue their activities as the stakes get higher.
